Tyra - I've a horrible feeling I'm missing out on an idiom here - but the rope was, indeed, heavy duty and was being used to moor a boat against the quayside and was about two and a half / three inches in diameter.

Elk - I suppose it depends where you live. When I took the photo, I thought I was photoing an everyday object but, of course, in lots of places, you simply wouldn't need to come across it!

I very much like your poem, Gordon - though the ending is sad.
