Tyra - I've a horrible feeling I'm missing out on an idiom here - but the rope was, indeed, heavy duty and was being used to moor a boat against the quayside and was about two and a half / three inches in diameter.
Elk - I suppose it depends where you live. When I took the photo, I thought I was photoing an everyday object but, of course, in lots of places, you simply wouldn't need to come across it!

I love this photo. There is so much texture and it's so grungy and just great!!!!
Thanks Vanillalotus.
Yes, it's a real working rope.
Probably smells of fish!

Just managed to complete my poem about your 'Rope'. It's up now at http://catapulttomars.blogspot.com/2008/10/mooring-rope.html
Hope you enjoy!
I very much like your poem, Gordon - though the ending is sad.
Of your poems (of the ones I've read!) - the three I like best are this one, the one about The Clearances and 'Storm'.
