Beautiful photos!
I was a bit bewidered... here in India, we mean the banana family when we refer to 'plantain'. Imagine my surprise ; D. A good surprise though.

Hello Muddy Boot Dreams, Barbee and Sunita . . .

It's interesting, isn't it? I have no idea why bananna-plantains and these wild plants (weeds if they are in gardens!)have the same name.

There are several plants grouped together here so I should probably clarify which one the plantain is - it's the one with the narrow, upright leaves (not the one with the ramshackle foamy kind which surrounds it).

But the plantain . . . it's part of the Plantaginiceae family. This one (and I hope I'm right in saying this) is 'Ribwort' - Plantago Lanceolata.

There are a lot of plantains so, if anyone would like to make a more precise identification then I am really open to be corrected . . . for the moment, though, this'll do . . .

. . . and mostly, the really important thing about this plant isn't its name but what you can do with it . . .

After it has flowered, you are left with a bullet shaped lump.

If you pick the stem and loop it round on itself and pull sharpish - the lump comes flying off like a bullet so . . . if you are a small boy . . . or are out for a walk with a small boy . . . or someone with similar tastes in entertainment to small boys . . . then you will probably find yourself running around the bank, plucking plantain stems, and pinging the heads off at anyone who comes near.

They are soft and light and don't travel far and have no force so you have to use a lot of imagination with this kind of game but . . . !

Thank you Hermes.

When I read your comment, my mind gave a 'click' - and my eyes re-opened differently and I've now seen something I hadn't noticed before. It made me understand Barbee's comment differently too.

I'm looking forward to knowing what you make of the picture I've posted for the 27th October - The Balustrade.

And thank you for becoming a follower of PICTURES JUST PICTURES - it's pleasing and encouraging.

In fact, thanks again to all of you who are 'following'. It's good to have company!

Hey Lucy, how come you get all the fun stuff? The plantains in my garden just go 'squish!" when squeezed : P
Thanks for that wonderfully descriptive explanation. I did wonder which one of that big mass of greenery was the plantain that you were talking about.
