Lucy Corrander said...: I don't think whatever is on the bay tree will matter. It is so big, it can look after itself.

I'm quite enjoying the rain. It's the gentle, warm type that smells nice.

Victoria Summerley said...: Looks like the work of bay suckers. I had it once and just snipped off the affected shoots. If you want an organic method of getting rid of them, you can also spray vegetable oil on the leaves - apparently it clogs the insects' respiration system. It might be an idea to give the tree a bit of a feed to help it shrug it off.

Lucy Corrander said...: Thanks for the link which explains that the church was moved when it was threatened with destruction because a new road was to be built, Dot. How the congregation must have loved that building! The cost must have been immense!

The site also introduced me to a 'Lobster and Wreath' event - another thing I had never heard of before.

Thanks for i.d.-ing what is eating my bay leaves. I don't think I'll be able to follow your advice to snip the affected leaves off because the tree is growing past the level of our first floor windows and is nearly the height of the guttering. Spraying with vegetable oil would be something of a challenge too! For the moment, I'll be content that there are more leaves than eaters. (And hope it stays that way!)

I was given the tree in a little pot as a house warming present about fifteen years ago. It was about a foot high then. It has since moved with me twice - but I think it will be staying where it is now!
