At first glance I thought it looked like prickly pear cacti in the desert. Obviously I'm wrong!

I agree. That's precisely what I think they look like - cacti in a desert!

I put the camera (i.e. mobile phone!) down against the ground to take this photo - that's why the plants look bigger than they are (about nine inches? something like that)and why the sky is wonky (I couldn't see through the viewfinder!).

It's bothering me this - how tall they really were . . . on reflection, I think it was less than nine inches . . . I'll have to go back and see!

I've found out what these plants are at last - Sea-Purslane (Halimione Partulacoides).
