Richard - the reason for the title is that the cat in the picture is sharpening its claws on an apple tree. By doing so, he is gouging great, long indentations in the bark which will remain there as scars.
So like a cat - in looks and behaviour. For indolent animals they are remarkably persistent. I had the same problem and had to put clematis netting around the trunk of my Ginko tree.
Great capture!!! My pets have developed the habit of stopping whatever they are doing that I want to take a photo of as soon as they see me coming with my camera!
