Modelled on a squashed spider?

I like the contrast Lucy, but that lamp post fascinates me. Why are all our modern ones so utilitarian, why can't they be attractive like this.

Hello Gordon and Hermes

The way comments get forwarded, I thought, at first, that the 'sqaushed spider' remark was from Hermes, which seemed very uncharacteristic! Now I understand.

As for new and old lampost designs - I think there are some recent ones that are quite good but local authorities set snares for themselves. I know of a street where some very beautiful lamposts were uprooted and taken to be put up in a park several miles away - because the council regulations said there weren't enough in the street they belonged to. Lamposts had to be set at a particular distance between each one and these were too far apart. The residents of the street protested and said they were happy with the lighting level as it was - but no . . . off with the old (to be admired somewhere else) and in came the new . . . hum. (No squashed spiders there!)
