It's interesting, this question of colour in relation to life and death / or not-deadness.
I think of this as a silver photo rather than a black and white one . . . and the ghostliness in this kind of silver is somewhere between being alive and being dead, not quite one or the other. And these leaves, by being silver (instead of warmly golden or brown) seem to enter a state of 'always-like-this-ness' - with an atmosphere of permanence instead of transition - thus side-stepping autumn . . .

Leaves that are just entering the ghost stage!
Interesting that they look much deader without pigment. No wonder they cling to their Autumn colours.
